TEHRAN: At least 10 police officers were killed in a “terrorist attack” in southeastern Iran, local media reported on Saturday.
The police officers were killed during an attack on “police vehicles” in Sistan-Baluchistan province’s Taftan county, the Mehr and Tasnim news agencies reported.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred some 1,200 kilometres (745 miles) southeast of the capital Tehran.
The official IRNA news agency, citing a police statement, reported the death of “10 personnel in two patrol units” in what it called an ambush.
Early Saturday, Israel launched strikes against targets in Iran, with the Israel army claiming on social media that it was in “reply to months of continuous strikes” by Tehran.
Arab media cited Israeli army X as claiming, “Right now the Israeli Army is conducting precise attacks on military targets in Iran,”.
In Tehran, the sound of blasts could be heard, with state-run media there earlier admitting at least six explosions were heard around the city and adding some of the sounds came from air defence systems around Tehran.
