RCMP Manitoba officer Rob Hill told the media after the collision, ” I can confirm that a bus carrying around 25 people collided with a semi-trailer truck at the intersection of Highway One and Highway Five. Rob Hill added that most of the people in the bus were senior citizens”.

He confirmed that fifteen people have died in the road accident. He maintained that ten people were shifted to the hospital.  AFP reported that hospitals in the area confirmed they were responding to large numbers of wounded and that all services were on high alert.

“The news from Carberry, Manitoba is incredibly tragic,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on his official social media account, saying he was sending his “sincere condolences” to relatives of the victims.  He added, “I can’t imagine the pain you are feeling, but Canadian people are here for you,”.

Officials said the highway was closed on both sides and they were urging motorists to avoid the area.

Thursday’s accident echoes a 2018 tragedy in which 15 people were killed in a crash in Saskatchewan when a truck collided with a bus carrying young ice hockey players.
