KABUL: Afghan Taliban authorities have apprehended 18 employees of an international NGO, including an American woman, on charges of conducting Christian missionary activities in Afghanistan, according to statements from the country’s leaders on Saturday.

The International Assistance Mission (IAM) confirmed that its staff members were taken into custody from its office in Ghor province, central Afghanistan, and transported to Kabul. Abdul Wahid Hamas Ghori, a government spokesman for the province, revealed that security and intelligence agencies had been monitoring the group for some time. He stated that they had acquired documents and audio recordings suggesting that the individuals were engaged in preaching Christianity, although he did not provide further details. Among those detained is an American woman.

IAM had earlier released a statement acknowledging that 18 individuals, including a “foreigner,” were being held, but the organization had no information regarding the specific allegations.

IAM’s website indicates that the organization is founded on Christian values but does not provide aid based on political or religious beliefs. The Swiss-registered group emphasized its respect for local customs and cultures.

IAM Activities in Afghanistan

IAM has been active in Afghanistan since 1966, spanning various governments, including royal, communist, and Taliban regimes. Initially specializing in eye care, the organization later expanded its services to include health and education.

In 2010, 10 IAM medical personnel, including eight foreigners, were killed in a remote northern Afghanistan attack. The motive behind the attack remained a subject of debate, with police suggesting it was likely a robbery. However, two militant groups, including the Taliban, claimed responsibility, alleging that the medics were Christian missionaries and accusing them of espionage.
