NEW YORK: A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO sports car has been sold for whopping price tag of $51.7 million in New York, making it the second most expensive car ever sold at auction.

Sotheby’s, the world’s largest brokers of fine and decorative art, jewellery, and collectible, said that car had been the property of an American collector for the past 38 years. It noted that its auction price was surpassed only by that of a Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe that went for $144 million in 2022.

The 250 GTO went for sale on Monday evening after a few minutes of bidding in the auction room.

1962, legendary Scuderia sports car has four-liter engine developing 390 horsepower and had finished second in a 1,000 km endurance race on the German Nurburgring circuit.

After several years of competition in Italy, the car was sold and exported to the US in the late 1960s.

American owners restored and modified car several times before ending up in the hands of an Ohio dedicated collector in 1985, who auctioned it on Monday.

Sotheby’s said that the GTO offers extreme touring and vintage racing enjoyment, or display at major car exhibitions worldwide.
