ISLAMABAD: At least 21 people were killed and 83 more injured after a ballistic missile attack on the centre of Ukraine’s north-eastern city of Sumy, according to Ukraine’s interior ministry.
Ukraine’s state emergency service claimed, “Russia hit the city centre with ballistic missiles. Right when there were many people on the street,” the service said on social media.
According to BBC, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the “horrific” strike hit an “ordinary city street” and a rescue operation is under way.
Zelensky called on global leaders to “respond firmly” to the strike, adding: “Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging this war out”.
Ukrainian interior ministry
Ukraine’s Interion Ministry said the number of people wounded in a Russian ballistic missile attack on Ukraine’s city of Sumy on Sunday rose to 83 people.
“Eighty-three people were wounded, including seven children,” the interior ministry said, adding that rescue operations were ongoing.
Posting on his Telegram channel, President Zelensky says Russia hit the centre of Sumy “on the day when people go to church – Palm Sunday, the feast of the Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem”.
“The United States, Europe, everyone in the world who wants an end to this war and murders. Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging out this war. Without pressure on the aggressor, peace is impossible,” Zelensky says.
He adds that “talks have never stopped ballistic missiles and air bombs”.
