23 Killed in Bus Crash in Peru

LIMA: As many as 23 people were killed in Peru when a bus crashed in the northern area of the country, careening down a 1,000-foot ravine, officials said Tuesday.

The accident took place in a remote, rural road in the Cusca district in Andean province of Corongo, in the Peru’s north.

Rescue efforts were underway in the difficult-to-access region, located some 10,000 feet above sea level, the Regional Emergency Authority said.

The death toll climbed from a count of twenty earlier in the day, with 6 wounded, after 3 people died of serious wounds.

Road accidents especially deadly bus crashes, are often in the South American nations, particularly in those involving drivers going at very high speeds on poorly maintained roads in hilly region.

A local official admitted that the road was is in terrible condition… those were the consequences. However, Police have not yet determined the reason of the bus accident in the area.

In September, at least 25 bus passengers passed away in an accident in the south part of the country.

Not even a few weeks later, in the month of August, another fatal accident in the same area killed around 13, leaving 5 seriously wounded, AFP reported.
