23 People Killed in Peru Political Unrest

BOGOTA: Political crisis is deepening in Peru as the death toll in countrywide protest demonstrations sparked by the impeaching of ex-President Pedro Castillo has reached 23, officials said on Saturday.

The South American country has declared an emergency as clashes between protesters and police rage on in several parts of the country after the impeachment and arrest of the former President.

Peru Ombudsman’s Office said that at least 569 people, including security personnel, were injured in the country’s Lima and other cities, including Ancash, Apurimac, Ayacucho, Cusco, Moquegua, Cajamarca, and Puno.

Political Unrest

Peru’s Coordinator for Human Rights said that using force against protesters should be stopped immediately and asked the authorities to conduct thorough probs. The Right group blamed the country’s “highest political officials” for the violence.

It demanded an end to the army’s interference as thousands of troops swarmed the country following the state of emergency was announced in Peru.

It may be recalled that the protesters are demanding the resignation of the country’s new President, new elections, and the dissolution of parliament. The protestors also demanded the former President’s immediate release. – APP
