ISLAMABAD: The 29th anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide, the worst atrocity on European soil since World War II, will be observed tomorrow (Thursday).

More than eight thousand Bosniak Muslim men and boys were systematically murdered in Srebrenica due to their identity. About 100,000 people were killed, more than 2.2 million were displaced, and over 30,000 women were raped as part of a systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide across the country.

On May 23, 2024, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. This UN resolution recognizes the victims and survivors, supporting their pursuit of truth, justice and guarantees of non-recurrence.

The International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica serves as an occasion to remember innocent victims and promote human rights. It fosters the personal responsibility of citizens in democratic societies to prevent such atrocities from occurring again.
