3 Killed as Manipur Burns

MANIPUR: Violence has erupted again in Manipur and the killing spree continues.

The latest reports from the police and other independent sources say three people have been killed including a father and son.

The remote Northeastern State in India, close to Myanmar has two tribes Meitei and Kuki battling it out and the three killed represented majority Metei community in Bishnupur district.

Court’s decision in May in favour of Metei community where directions were given for economic benefits and job placements that in the past were reserved for Kuki people.

The clashes have been going on between the two communities after the court verdict and over the time, 180 people have been killed and thousands have left their homes.

Over 180 people have been killed and thousands have fled their homes since the violence started in Manipur, a state of 3.2 million that borders Myanmar.

The unrest in Myanmar witnessed an influx of refugees in 2021 and Kuki’s share same ethnic lineage with Chin community in Myanmar making Meites fear for their lives as with refugees arrival, they will be outnumbered.

At present, in the ongoing clash, hundreds of people are wounded on both sides.
