49 Wounded as Typhoon Lan Passes Through Japan

TOKYO: At least 49 people were wounded as powerful Typhoon Lan hit Japan on Wednesday before heading to the Sea of Japan, bringing rains and damages to several areas of the country.

A total of 49 people in 9 prefectures in central to western Japan were injured, including twenty-four people in Hyogo prefecture, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, which said that storm also damaged 141 homes, Xinhua reported.

As the 7th typhoon of the year brought rains and gusts to central and western Japan, the western prefecture of Tottori witnessed record rainfall.

Authorities in Tottori issued a top-level emergency warning as the city’s Sajicho District recorded hourly rainfall of 97.5 millimeters, the highest since statistics started in 1982.

Two bridges were swept and a road was sheared away by powerful waters unleashed by the storm in Tottori city.

More than 1,800 people in 844 households were left stranded due to the typhoon in Tottori prefecture as of 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Heavy Rains in Central Japan

Due to heavy rain in the central parts of the country on Wednesday, direct bullet train services between Hakata and Tokyo were halted, making several main train stations crowded with stranded travellers. The rail services were gradually restored later during the day.

nearly 50,000 households were affected by power outages in several areas, including Mie, Aichi, Tokushima, Wakayama, Osaka, and Shizuoka, from Tuesday to Wednesday.
