5.3 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

PESHAWAR: Tremors were felt in various parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Sunday after a magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted the region.

According to Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake tremors were felt in Swat, Upper Dir, and its adjourning areas.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said that the magnitude of the quake on the Richter scale was recorded at 5.3, and the epicenter was in the Hindukush mountains in Afghanistan at a depth of 154 kilometers.

Earlier in January, earthquake tremors of 5.6 magnitudes jolted Peshawar, Kohat, and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) reported the quake’s epicenter was 237 kilometers away from Chitral in the west. The earthquake’s depth was 190 kilometers, and its magnitude on the Richter scale was 5.6.

The earthquake jolts were felt in Mohmand,  Battagram, Swat, Charsadda, and other areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. No casualty or loss of property was reported after the earthquake.

It is to be mentioned here that the tremors relatively closer to the surface are likely to bear long-term adverse effects on the buildings.
