MANILA: The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported that a magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit Mindanao, Philippines, on Saturday, with a depth of 10 km (6 miles).

However, the Philippine seismology agency provided a different assessment, citing it as a magnitude 5.9 quake at a depth of 27 km (16.8 miles). Despite the discrepancy, the Philippine agency assured in a bulletin that no damage was expected, though aftershocks were possible.

Unfortunately, rescue efforts in Maco town, Davao de Oro, to locate numerous missing individuals following a prior landslide had to be halted due to the earthquake, according to authorities. The landslide, occurring on Tuesday night near a gold mining site, has resulted in 28 fatalities, with 77 individuals still unaccounted for and 32 injured.

Remarkably, a 3-year-old girl was rescued on Friday after spending 60 hours trapped under rubble. Davao de Oro has been grappling with severe weather conditions in recent weeks, including floods and landslides triggered by torrential rains.
