CAPE TOWN: Local authorities said on Tuesday that at least 5 people were killed in the South African city of Cape Town as a strike by taxi drivers that started last week turned violent.

The South African Taxi Council announced a provincial shutdown last Thursday following failing to resolve several issues with the local authorities in Cape Town.

The complaints arose following a new civic law that gave local government the power to confiscate buses for violations like driving without registration plates or a license.

Irregular violence erupted in several parts of Cape Town following police began confiscation of vehicles last week, as annoyed protesters torched cars and buses and also pelted the police personnel with stones.

Among the dead was a British citizen, who was killed on Thursday, officials said on Tuesday, saying the violence and murders are being probed. According to the officials, as many as 120 suspects had been apprehended since Thursday for harming property, and violence.

The officials said the strike had badly affected citizens commuting to work and, at times, left them stranded because of assaults on public transportation.
