5 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts China

GUANGZHOU:  An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter Scale struck southeast of Guangdong province early Monday, the US Geological Survey said.

According to the USGS, the seismic activity occurred 54 km southeast of Huanggang, Guangdong at 3:20 am local time (GMT +8).

The depth of the earthquake was 10 km and initially determined to be at 23.353 degrees north latitude and 117.395degrees east longitude.

Normally quakes of such magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary. There were no reports of damage and injuries due to the earthquake so far.

The tremors were felt in Huanggang, Chenghua, Shantou, Anbu and Haimen.
