OUAGADOUGOU: In a tragic incident, at least 53 soldiers were killed in militant attack on security forces in northern Burkina Faso, the country’s army confirmed on Tuesday.

The attack occurred on Monday, leading to the unfortunate demise of 53 soldiers and civilian volunteers who were supporting the army’s efforts. These dedicated individuals lost their lives while bravely repelling the militant assault, as detailed in a statement issued by the army’s general staff.

The targeted unit had been stationed in the town of Koumbri within the Yatenga province. Its primary mission was to facilitate the resettlement of residents who had been displaced from the area by militant activities over two years ago.

Additionally, the army reported that approximately 30 members of the security forces sustained injuries during the attack. It was also noted that a successful counter-operation had been conducted, resulting in the neutralization of several attackers and the destruction of their combat equipment.

Challenges to Burkina Faso

Ongoing operations are currently underway in the affected region as security forces work diligently to ensure the safety and security of the area.

Burkina Faso has faced significant challenges in recent times, including two military coups last year. These events were driven by frustrations stemming from the government’s inability to effectively combat a militant insurgency that originated in neighboring Mali in 2015. Tragically, this insurgency has claimed the lives of thousands, with over 16,000 casualties, including civilians, troops, and police, according to statistics from an NGO.

The year 2023 alone has witnessed over 5,000 fatalities in militant attacks, highlighting the urgency of addressing the ongoing security crisis. Additionally, the conflict has resulted in more than two million people being internally displaced within Burkina Faso, marking one of the most severe internal displacement crises on the African continent.
