GUATEMALA CITY: Late on Friday night, southern Guatemala experienced a 6.1-magnitude earthquake, with the epicenter located seven kilometers from the town of Taxisco, as reported by the US Geological Survey.
The quake, which occurred at a depth of 108 kilometers, was felt across the southern region and in Antigua Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage town situated 45 kilometers southwest of the capital, Guatemala City.

Guatemala’s Seismology Institute measured the tremor as 6.0, and despite the significant magnitude, officials have reported no casualties or material damage so far. Civil protection spokesman Rodolfo Garcia assured that authorities are closely monitoring the situation at the national level.
The seismic activity is a common occurrence in Guatemala due to its geographical location, situated at the convergence point of the Caribbean and Cocos tectonic plates. Approximately 90 percent of the country’s territory is considered earthquake-prone. The prompt response and monitoring by civil protection authorities underscore the country’s preparedness to address and manage natural disasters, minimizing the potential impact on the population.
