MANILA: The US Geological Survey said that a 6.1 magnitude quake shocked the central Philippines early Thursday.
Local media reports that the strong earthquake struck off Masbate province shortly following 2:00 a.m. local time, jolting people up.

USGS said that the epicenter of the quake was seven miles from the village of Miaga, Masbate.
Officials said that they did not report any damages in the area. Similarly, no tsunami warning was issued in the country.
Masbate provincial police chief Rolly Albana told AFP that it was a strong earthquake. He said that he was sleeping when they were shaken and woken up. He added that police did not report any damage after the strong quake.

However, another police official said that some people fled their homes after the earthquake in the area.
Gregorio Adigue, a disaster management official said that he also felt a strong aftershock nearly an hour following the earthquake. He said that buildings in the area did not seem to be damaged. The official further said that later they will visit around schools in entire area to inspect their buildings.
However, the Masbate education department reportedly ordered to suspend of classes for Thursday due to aftershocks in the province.
