6 Killed, 14 Wounded in Mongolia Explosion: Authorities

ULAANBAATAR: Six people were killed and 14 wounded in a gas blast caused by a vehicle crash in Mongolia’s capital on Wednesday, officials said.

A vehicle carrying around 60 tons of liquified natural gas (LNG) collided with a car and exploded Wednesday, the Mongolian National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) announced.

The Mongolian National Emergency Management Agency said in a statement that preliminary results suggest three people died in the explosion. It added that three firefighters were also killed while 14 injured people were shifted to hospitals for medical treatment.

Ten of those were taken for medical treatment for burns, while one child was being treated for poisoning and 3 other infants were being cared for.

Rescue teams and workers were dispatched to the site and the fire had been extinguished, it maintained.

Potos shared by NEMA showed emergency services at the site of the fire, with massive flames engulfing the street.

The images showed the burnt-out husks of two vehicles and widespread damage to the street, with windows also blown out at a nearby school.

US envoy to Mongolia Richard Buangan said he was “deeply saddened to learn about the tragic mishap”.

In a statement via social media, the ambassador said, “I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their lives in this accident.”
