TOKYO: A strong 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Taiwan shortly before 9:00 am (0000 GMT) on Wednesday, prompting a tsunami warning for southern islands of Japan.
According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency tsunami waves could be as high as three meters. The tsunami is expected immediately for remote Japanese islands near Taiwan, including Miyakojima island.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) the quake had a magnitude of 7.4, with epicenter 18 kilometers south of Taiwan’s Hualien City at a depth of 34.8 km.
A local tv has shown a banner saying ‘Evacuate!’
An anchor on NHK tv channel warned the viewers “Tsunami is coming. Please evacuate immediately.”
