7-member Bench of Supreme Court Resumes Hearing over Pleas on Military Courts

ISLAMABAD: A new seven-member bench resumed hearing on Thursday afternoon over petitions challenging the trial of civilians in military courts after a nine-member bench was dissolved following objections raised by Justice Qazi Faez Isa and later joined by Justice Sardar Tariq Mas.

Earlier today, a nine-member bench including Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Isa, Justice Mas­o­­od, Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Ijazul Ahsan, Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Sayyed Ma­­zahar Ali Akbar Naqvi Justice Yayha Afridi and Justice Ayesha Malik was formed to tackle the case.

After resuming the hearing before the new bench, the Chief Justice of Pakistan said, if anyone had concerns on the bench. On that, Ietezaz Ahsan and Attorney General Usman Awan said they have no objection.

The lawyer of petitioner Itezaz Ahsan, Latif Khosa started the arguments before the 7-member bench. Latif Khosa expressed that he was not in favor of anyone who had done wrong should be spared.

“Any one who has attacked the military installations, I have no sympathy for them”, remarked Latif Khosa.

“We want to stay in fact, the cases which are registered have many names”, remarked the CJP adding, “Are these statements taken from the military website”.

Court asked if there was anyone who has annexed the Corpse Commander Meeting Statement, on which Latif Khosa read the statement of the meeting and told the court that these statements are published on the ISPR website.
