BANGUI, Central African Republic: Officials said that suspected militants attacked a gold mining site in the Central African Republic, killing 9 Chinese citizens and wounding 2 others Sunday.

Officials say armed men kill 9 in Central African Republic

The recent attack came just days following armed men kidnapped 3 Chinese citizens in the country’s west close to the border with Cameroon. City mayor Abel Matipata said that the attack on the gold mine started around 5 a.m. when the armed men overpowered the site’s security guards and opened fire. Local officials said they were pursuing the attackers, but did not provide further details. A local Ange Morel Gbatangue said that the government is confronting challenges to protect its citizens and foreigners living in the African country.

According to Associated Press (AP), no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack in the area.  Anselme Bangue, who supports the incumbent president, said the recent attack on Chinese nationals was an act of “extreme cowardice.”
