ISLAMABAD: The prices of petrol and diesel hit a record high on Saturday, as the caretaker government raised fuel prices by up to Rs. 26.02 per litre, another massive hike in a fortnight that is expected to further stoke high inflation in the South Asian country. The Ministry of Finance said in a post on social media after midnight.

The new petrol price will be Rs.331.38 per litre from today (Saturday) following an increase of Rs. 26.02 per litre, the finance ministry said in a notification.  Similarly, high-speed diesel would be even more expensive, with its price going up by Rs. 17.34 to Rs.329.18.

As per the notification, the decision was taken owing to the increasing tendency of petroleum prices in the global market.  The development comes on the heels of an already huge hike on September 1, when the caretaker government increased fuel prices by up to Rs18 per litre.
