Iranian President Blames US of ‘Fanning Flames’ in Ukraine War

NEW YORK: Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has accused the US of worsening war in Ukraine but insisted that his country would support a peace settlement, Western media reported on Tuesday. He expressed these remarks during his speech at the UN General Assembly.

He said, “The US has fanned the flames of violence in Ukraine to weaken the European nations”. He added, that unfortunately, this is a long-term plan.

He added that Tehran does not support the Ukrainian war and would support ceasefire initiatives and diplomatic steps to end the conflict.

Raisi demanded an end to American sanctions against Iran, after a halt in dialogue on restoring a nuclear agreement.

He said, “These sanctions have not produced the desired outcome. It is time now for Washington to bring a cessation to its wrong path and select the right side,”.

President Raeisi held up a copy of the Holy Qur’an, condemning the desecration of the holy book following recent incidents in Sweden.

Earlier, Britain’s Foreign Secretary James Cleverly asked Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to push Russia to withdraw its forces from Ukraine and stress to Russia the significance of respect for sovereignty, Western media reported.

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also spoke at the session of the UN General Assembly.
