WASHINGTON: Former US Vice President Mike Pence has announced to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, adding “this is not my time”.  He made the announcement at a gathering in Las Vegas on Saturday. In a statement, he said that they always knew this would be a hard fight.

He is the first key Republican candidate to suspend his drive in a race led by Donald Trump. He had been trailing behind former President Trump in the polls. He further said that he was leaving the campaign, but would never leave the battle for conservative values.  The former Vice President of the US lost the support of many Republicans when he broke with Trump over the January 6 riot in 2021, and when he also presided over the certification of Biden’s 2020 election results in Congress.

Trump rebuked Pence for lacking “courage” when he declined to overturn the Democratic leader’s election win. Many rioters were heard chanting slogans “hang Mike Pence” as they attacked the halls of Congress in 2021, and since then many Trump supporters have viewed him as a traitor.
