Ukrainian President Tells People to Prepare for Russian Winter Assault

KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Ukrainians to ready for new waves of Russian strikes on infrastructure as winter approached and added force were anticipating an attack in the eastern theater of the war, Western media reported on Sunday.

A military spokesperson said Russian strikes on the shattered eastern town of Avdiivka had eased earlier, but were likely to increase in the upcoming days, Reuters reported.

President Zelensky issued his new warning during his video address a day following Russian troops conducted their first missile strike on Kyiv in some seven weeks.

Earlier on Sunday, Ukraine claimed an explosion triggered by “local resistance movements” in Russia-controlled Ukrainian city of Melitopol the last day killed Russian army officers at a headquarters of the occupation authorities.

According to AFP, Melitopol, with a pre-war population of about 150,000 people, was arrested early following Moscow invaded Ukraine in February in 2022.

“At least 3 officers of the Russian army were killed” as a result of the action, conducted by men of the local resistance movement,” Ukraine’s defence ministry claimed on Telegram. AFP reported that it did not verify the claim of the Ukrainian officials.

“The attack on the headquarters was conducted during the meeting of the Russian military officials,” the same source stated.

The exiled mayor of Melitopol Ivan Fedorov said on Saturday that locals reported a “blast, which was heard across the city” and police vehicles speeding via the city. Several Russian officials have been killed in the strikes in territories controlled by Russian forces since the attack began.
