KABUL: The World Food Program (WFP) in Afghanistan has issued an urgent appeal, stating that $400 million is crucial to provide essential food aid before the onset of winter in the country.
As winter is just weeks away, Afghanistan faces the looming challenge of entire communities being cut off by mounds of snow and ice. The WFP emphasized the need for $400 million to preposition food and ensure timely assistance to the most vulnerable populations in the country before winter conditions become impassable.
Humanitarian Crises in Afghanistan
Afghanistan remains one of the largest humanitarian crises globally, with over 29 million people requiring humanitarian assistance this year. The stark reality is that more than 90% of the population lives below the poverty line, and around 17 million people are currently grappling with acute food insecurity.
The recent earthquakes in Herat have further exacerbated the already dire humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. The WFP’s appeal underscores the critical importance of international support to address the urgent food needs of vulnerable communities before they are isolated by the harsh winter conditions.
