BUENOS AIRES: Libertarian outsider Javier Milei has been elected as new president of Argentina on Sunday, Western media reported on Sunday.
According to official results Milei got near 56 percent versus while his rival Economy Minister Sergio Massa, who conceded defeat in a speech secured 44 percent votes.
Earlier Massa said that the results are not according to his expectations. He said he spoke to Javier Milei to congratulate him and wish him well, because he is the president according to the wishes of the people of Argentina who elected him for the next four years.
Milei has pledged an economic shock therapy during his election campaign. His plans include closure of the central bank, ditching the local currency peso, and cutting spending.

Meanwhile Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva congratulated Argentinian president-elect and wished him good luck and success as well as to the people of Argentina.
In a social media post he congratulated the far-right winner of Argentina’s presidential race.
Lula in a post on X, formerly Twitter, said Argentina is a great country and deserves all of our respect. He said Brazil will always be available to work together with our Argentine brothers.
Milei has been very popular among the young, who have grown up seeing their country affected from one crisis to another.
In the first round of vote in October, Milei struck an alliance with the conservatives, which enhanced his support. He faced a highly divided Congress, with no single bloc having a majority, meaning that he needed to get back from other factions to push through legislation.
