ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Monday ordered relevant authorities to promptly formulate a strategy for the implementation of an integrated transit trade management system.
Chairing a meeting in Islamabad focused on Afghan Transit Trade and the prevention of smuggling, the premier also urged effective measures to enhance and secure the tracking system for Afghan transit trade.
Addressing the economic challenges posed by smuggling and illegal transportation of goods in Pakistan, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for disciplinary action against any official engaged in smuggling, advocating for exemplary punishment. He also directed authorities to obtain intelligence clearance before appointing any officer to sensitive Customs positions.
Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar issued directives to the Chief Secretary of Balochistan to overhaul the administrative machinery in the Chagai district, citing negligence in preventing smuggling.
Underlining the importance of tightening monitoring systems in border areas, including the Chaman border in Balochistan and Torkham and Ghulam Khan check posts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Prime Minister stressed the need to enhance cargo checking procedures and increase Customs staff at the Chaman border. He underscored the necessity of relentless efforts to generate employment and livelihood opportunities for the people of Balochistan.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister received a briefing on the progress of the investigation committee examining issues related to Afghan Transit Trade. He commended the committee’s performance and urged it to prepare recommendations diligently.
The meeting also reported a significant reduction in the smuggling of petroleum products from Iran due to government measures. Additionally, it highlighted the launch of a cargo tracking system from Taftan to Quetta.
