Dancers and musicians decked up in colourful costumes take part in a carnival in Lagos, Nigeria. Called Fanti or Caretta Carnival, the event is a yearly tradition usually held on the first day of the year, and was inspired by former slaves who returned from Brazil to Lagos in the 19th century. “Yes, the country is down economically but we are still excited, this is a year for celebration for all of us here,” says Nicholas Adeshile, one of the organisers and participants of the carnival.
