BEIJING: China and Nauru officially re-established diplomatic relations on Wednesday, formalizing their ties after the South Pacific nation decided to sever connections with Taiwan. The signing ceremony, held in Beijing, marked the culmination of this diplomatic realignment, as reported by the state news agency Xinhua.

Nauru’s announcement last Monday, immediately following elections, dealt a blow to Taiwan. The island nation declared that it would no longer recognize Taiwan as a separate country but rather as an integral part of China’s territory. This unexpected decision was considered a diplomatic victory for Beijing, particularly as Nauru had been one of the few nations officially acknowledging Taiwan on a diplomatic basis.

As of now, only 12 states, including the Holy See, extend full recognition to Taiwan. Nauru, with a population of 12,500, holds the distinction of being one of the world’s smallest countries, situated about 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) northeast of Sydney.

The formal re-establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Nauru underscores the evolving geopolitical landscape and the strategic decisions countries are making in their international relations.
