CAIRO: The UN food agency has said it has received reports of people dying from hunger in Sudan, where raging fighting between rival parties is hampering the distribution of help and food supplies to those most affected people, western media reported on Saturday.

The 10 months of was between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has ruined vast swaths of the country. The war erupted last April in Khartoum, and quickly spread to other parts of the country, following months of simmering tensions between the two sides. World Food Program stated that around 18 million people across Sudan face acute hunger in the country.

Eddie Rowe, WFP’s director for Sudan said that life-saving help is not reaching those who need it the most, and they are already receiving reports of people dying of starvation in Sudan.

The UN says around 12,000 people have been killed in the war, although local doctors say the true toll is far higher. More than 10.7 million people have been displaced, the UN migration agency said.

Both parties in the war have been accused of war crimes by human rights groups, western media reported.
