ISLAMABAD: During the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Chinese streaming giants are providing football fans with a metaverse-like experience.

Migu, a streaming service, and Chinese TikTok (Douyin) will host Virtual Reality (VR) metaverse experiences that will allow remote spectators to watch the FIFA World Cup in virtual rooms together.

Virtual reality is the experience where users feel immersed in a simulated world using hardware such as headsets.

VR headset manufacturer, Pico, announced that users could watch live broadcasts of the world cup using VR goggles, watching games in virtual rooms with other users.

Virtual reality to boost traffic during the FIFA world cup

According to observers, the initiatives will assist the tech giants in securing increased traffic during the all-popular sporting event. Still, what matters more is that widespread use of the new technology will enable businesses to refine their product offers.

Growth of virtual reality in China

To promote the growth of the VR industry, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China and four other state agencies published a five-year strategy for 2022 to 2026, intending to reach an industrial scale of more than 350 billion yuan ($48.1 billion) in 2026.

The fundamental objective of the strategy is to make significant strides in critical fields, such as three-dimensionality, and to strengthen the ecosystem to encourage the adoption of VR to spur economic growth.
