Apple’s major Chinese supplier, Foxconn, has apologized to workers for a “technical error” that occurred while hiring a new workforce at a COVID-hit iPhone factory in China.

The development comes after hundreds of protestors smashed CCTV cameras and windows, chanting slogans and demanding their pay, at the world’s largest iPhone factory plant in Zhengzhou.

According to videos circulated on social media, workers said they had been informed that Foxconn had planned to delay bonus payments. Some labours complained they were forced to share rooms with colleagues who had tested positive for the COVID virus.

Foxconn said their team had been looking into the matter and discovered a “technical error” during the hiring. In addition, the company apologized for an “input error” and guaranteed that the actual pay would be the same as agreed.
