OIC State Members Gather in Gambia for 15th Islamic Summit Conference

JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will hold its 15th session of the Islamic Summit Conference in Banjul, the capital of the Gambia, next month on May 4.

Held under the theme “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development,” the two-day summit aims to address pressing issues on the OIC agenda and the challenges confronting its Member States.

Prior to the summit, a preparatory meeting of senior officials will take place on April 30 and May 1, 2024, to discuss session documents and present their findings to the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) preparatory meeting. The CFM meeting, scheduled for May 1-2, 2024, will review the senior officials’ report and subsequently submit its findings to the summit.

Hissein Brahim Taha, the OIC Secretary-General, will lead a high-level delegation from the OIC General Secretariat to participate in the summit proceedings in Banjul.

Leaders of the Member States will engage in discussions covering various political, economic, humanitarian, social, and cultural issues, including the Palestinian cause, youth and women empowerment, family matters, science and technology, information dissemination, Muslim communities and minorities in non- OIC Member States, and legal affairs.

The summit will also address concerns regarding hate speech, Islamophobia, dialogue promotion, climate change, and food security.

During the summit, the Secretary-General will present a comprehensive report highlighting the significant activities, programs, and projects undertaken by the OIC since the previous Islamic Summit Conference.

The 15th session will conclude with the issuance of a final communique, encompassing OIC positions on the discussed matters, a resolution on Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif, and the Banjul Declaration.
