KYIV: Ukraine may soon deploy robot dogs on the front lines, taking over dangerous tasks like spying on Russian trenches or detecting mines, potentially replacing soldiers for perilous missions.

According to AFP, in a demonstration at an undisclosed location in Ukraine, the robotic dog, model “BAD One,” was shown standing, crouching, running, and jumping in response to commands from its operator. Stealthy and agile, these robot dogs could soon become a crucial asset for the Ukrainian army, which is facing manpower shortages in its efforts to repel the Russian invasion, according to the developers.

With their low profile and difficult-to-detect design, the robot dogs are equipped with thermal imaging to inspect enemy trenches or the interiors of buildings in combat zones.

“We have surveillance soldiers who are sent on reconnaissance missions, often highly trained and experienced, but always at risk,” explained the operator, who identified himself as “Yuri,” during the demonstration to AFP journalists.

“This dog reduces the risk to soldiers and enhances operational capabilities. That is its primary function,” said the operator, who works for a British company supplying military equipment.

A more advanced model, “BAD Two,” could not be displayed for security reasons. The demonstrated robot dog has a battery life of approximately two hours.  In addition to detecting mines or improvised explosive devices, the robot dog can carry up to 7 kilograms of ammunition or medical supplies to critical areas on the battlefield.
