MOSCOW: The Kremlin said on Monday that Russia will respond to Ukraine’s incursion into the western Kursk region, and dismissed the idea of ceasefire talks with Kyiv as no longer relevant.

On August 6, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers launched a surprise attack, breaching the Russian border. Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested the assault was aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s negotiating position and hindering the advance of Russian forces along the front lines.

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated, “Such hostile actions cannot go unanswered. There will definitely be a response.” However, Putin has yet to publicly outline the specifics of Russia’s intended response.

Peskov also rejected media reports of ceasefire negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, clarifying, “There were no negotiations. Many media reports about various contacts are not accurate.” He added that the topic of negotiations has largely lost its relevance at this time.
