SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has said that his country is now implementing a nuclear force construction policy in order to increase the number of nuclear weapon arsenal “exponentially,” official media KCNA reported on Tuesday.

In a speech on North Korea’s founding anniversary, Kim Jong Un stated that they must more systematically prepare its “nuclear competence and its readiness to use it properly at any given time in guaranteeing the security rights of the country”, KCNA added.

A strong military presence is required to face the various threats and challenges posed by the United States and its allies,” he said.

Kim also stated that North Korea is confronting a “grave threat” from what it said was a U.S.-led nuclear-based army alliance in the region.

According to Reuters news agency, South Korea will organize a defence ministerial meeting with the member nations of the United Nations Command (UNC) today. The UNC is led by the commander of the American military stationed in South Korea.

In August, Germany became the latest nation to join the UNC in South Korea that supports police the border with North Korea and has pledged to defend South Korea in the event of a war.

North Korea has also criticized the United Nations Command (UNC) as an “unlawful war organization” and Germany’s entry into the force as rising tensions in the region, Reuters reported.
