AMMAN: Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Sunday appointed Jaafar Hassan as the new prime minister, following parliamentary elections that saw the Islamic Action Front (IAF) emerge as the largest party in the legislature.

The royal palace announced the appointment, tasking Hassan with forming a new government.

The move comes after the resignation of the outgoing Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh, who submitted his resignation to the king earlier in the day.

According to Jordanian constitutional practice, the government typically resigns following legislative elections, and the king holds the authority to appoint the new prime minister rather than the parliament.

Jaafar Hassan, 56, who previously served as the chief of staff and as planning minister, will now lead the task of forming the new government.

In the parliamentary elections held on Tuesday, the Islamic Action Front (IAF), a political party with roots in the Muslim Brotherhood, achieved a notable victory, becoming the largest party in the 138-seat parliament with 31 seats.
