ASTANA: President of Kazakhstan on Monday said that a Chinese-Brazilian peace plan for the war in Ukraine needs to be supported.

“In our opinion, the peace plan of China and Brazil deserves support,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said during talks in Astana with visiting German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Tokayev said that further escalation of the conflict in Ukraine would lead to irreparable losses for mankind and for all those nations which are directly involved in the conflict.

He noted that a good chance to achieve a truce was missed with the refusal to conclude the 2022 Istanbul agreements early in the conflict. He strongly believed the opportunity to achieve peace still exists.

“It is necessary to carefully consider all peace initiatives of various states and come to a decision to stop military action, and then move on to discussing territorial issues,” he also said.

He went on to say that as leaders come and go, people must live in peace and mutual understanding.

Tokayev went on to say Kazakhstan has the longest delimited land border with Russia in the world, and cooperation between the countries is developing within the framework of strategic partnership.

He added there is genuine sympathy in Kazakhstan for the people of Ukraine and the Kazakh embassy continues to function in Kyiv.

China and Brazil in May presented a joint six-point proposal for peace talks with Russia and Ukraine. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week dismissed the proposal, whereas Russian officials have welcomed the proposal.
