UNITED NATIONS: China has accused the United States of obstructing efforts to secure a cease-fire in Gaza as the conflict approaches its one-year mark.

During a UN Security Council briefing, Chinese Ambassador Geng Shuang criticized the US for repeatedly shielding Israel from international resolutions calling for a halt to military operations.

Geng highlighted the severe humanitarian toll of the ongoing Israeli offensive, which began on October 7 last year.

The conflict has resulted in over 41,000 Palestinian civilian deaths mostly women and children, according to Chinese estimates. The UN Security Council has struggled to pass resolutions to end the violence, largely due to US opposition, Geng argued.

The Chinese diplomat urged the US to leverage its influence to pressure Israel into ceasing its military actions immediately. He emphasized the need for the Security Council to fulfill its primary role of maintaining international peace and security, and called for urgent measures to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The Israeli assault, which followed an attack by Hamas, has caused significant casualties and widespread displacement among Gaza’s population. The ongoing blockade has led to critical shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice over its actions in the region.

China’s call for international action reflects growing frustration with the inability of global institutions to address the escalating humanitarian disaster in Gaza.
