ALGIERS: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune took oath for a second term after securing 84 percent of the vote in the presidential polls held earlier.

In his address after the swearing-in ceremony, the newly elected President expressed gratitude to the people of the African country for their trust, announcing plans to engage in extensive talks with all political parties to open a national dialogue and draw up a roadmap for Algeria’s future progress and development in diverse fields.

He reiterated his resolve to fulfilling the pledges made during his election campaign, including achieving self-sufficiency in durum wheat by the end of 2025 and reaching complete self-sufficiency in barley and corn by 2026. The President also promised to expand irrigated land by around one million hectares.

On employment, Tebboune pledged to create around 450,000 jobs and set up 20,000 startups by the end of his term. He said that Algeria’s stability as well as financial resources have made it an attractive destination for investment, with about 9,000 new projects already in progress and a goal of 20,000 by the end of his term.

As for the industrial sector, the President aims to increase the sector’s contribution to national income and transform the country into an industrial nation.

He also expressed resolve to constructing two million new housing units and reaffirmed his promise to boost rural housing grants. Moreover, he also promised a 100 percent increase in salaries to guarantee a decent standard of living for all the citizens.

The incumbent president first took office in 2019 after a political crisis and the resignation of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, local media reported.
