GAZA CITY: At least 10 Palestinians, including women and children, have been killed, and several others were injured in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza City and Rafah, Palestinian news agency Wafa reported citing local sources.

The most devastating incident occurred in the Shujayea neighborhood of Gaza City, where Israeli forces targeted the Ibn al-Haytham School, which had been converted into a shelter for displaced Palestinian families.

Wafa reported that eight Palestinians were killed in the Israeli strike on the school, with many others suffering injuries. Those wounded were transported to the al-Ahli Arab (Baptist) Hospital for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, in Rafah, an Israeli drone strike hit a vehicle in the al-Mawasi area, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuring at least 10 others. The victims were taken to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

Gaza’s civil defence agency confirmed that the airstrike on the school-turned-shelter had claimed five lives. In a statement, they expressed sorrow over the incident and strongly condemned the attack.

The airstrikes marked the latest in a series of Israeli strikes targeting educational facilities, which have become makeshift shelters for displaced Gazans amidst the ongoing bombardment campaign.

On Saturday, five people were reported killed in a strike on the Shuhada al-Zeitun School in Gaza City. Additionally, a strike on the United Nations-run Al-Jawni School in central Gaza earlier this month resulted in 18 deaths, including six UN staff members, drawing international condemnation.

Since October 7, Israel has launched a relentless bombardment campaign in Gaza killing at least 41,272 Palestinians, mostly women and children, the territory’s health ministry reported. The ongoing Israeli military campaign has led to widespread devastation in the Gaza Strip.
