TAIPEI, Taiwan: Taiwan’s national security team is closely monitoring the situation following the detonation of thousands of pagers in Lebanon, which targeted Hezbollah.

This comes after a Taiwanese company, Gold Apollo, was linked to the production of the devices. However, the firm clarified that it did not manufacture the pagers used in the attack, explaining that the devices were made by a Budapest-based company licensed to use its brand.

Taiwan’s Defence Minister, Wellington Koo, confirmed that the government is paying great attention to the matter. Iran-backed Hezbollah has vowed retaliation against Israel, although Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attacks, which resulted in the deaths of nine people. The two sides have been engaged in ongoing cross-border conflict since the Gaza war began in October.

While Taiwan has offered support to Israel and condemned Hamas’ October 7 attack, Koo clarified that Taiwan does not have security or intelligence-sharing arrangements with Israel. Additionally, Taiwan’s government emphasized that the pagers exported from the island do not have explosive capabilities, dismissing online rumors attempting to link Taiwan’s government to the incident. Taiwan urged caution regarding misinformation and assured that its focus remains on stability in the Taiwan Strait.
