LONDON: Scientific advances helped prevent around 4.1 million deaths from cancer in the 30 years between 1991 and 2021, a report said.

The American Association for Cancer Research said that the deadly disease continues to be a public health challenge.  The recent report attributed the decline in overall cancer mortality to improvements in early detection as well as treatment. It added that reductions in smoking is also a major cause for the decline in the cancer.  The cancer death rate for kids and teenagers has also reduced 24 percent in the past twenty years.

The report stated that cancer diagnoses are becoming more and more common, and the scientific advances have not been uniformed for all types and stages of the deadly disease.

Cancer is still one of the main causes of death in many countries. The report noted that despite the overall rates of cancer stabilizing, cases of uterine cancer, pancreatic cancer, and human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oral cancers are increasing.

The report further said that excessive levels of alcohol consumption increase the risk for around 6 different types of cancer including breast, liver, colorectal, and stomach cancers.  The report emphasized the need for public messaging drives like cancer-specific warning labels showed on alcoholic beverages.
