Fact Check: Misleading Picture of Biden in Trump Cap Sparks Endorsement Claims

WASHINGTON: An image showing a moment when US President Joe Biden put on a “Trump 2024” cap during a 9/11 remembrance event has been shared on different platforms of social media to misleadingly claim Biden had “endorsed” Donald Trump.

“BREAKING: In a surprising turn of events US President Joe Biden has endorsed Trump for president. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” captioned, opens new tab one Threa ds post that shares the photo of Biden standing among a crowd, grinning with a red cap on that says: “Trump 2024.”

The Trump campaign also shared the same photo on social media alongside the caption: “Thanks for the support, Joe!”

President Biden had announced his endorsement for Vice President Kamala Harris in July as he pulled out of the presidential elections and has not changed his position since.

The moment occurred during a light-hearted exchange between President Biden and a man at the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department in Pennsylvania on September 11 during Harris and Biden’ visits to 9/11 sites.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated, opens new tab at a September 13 press briefing that President Biden gave “a presidential hat to a person who was wearing a Trump cap.” Then, “in return, the person said that, in the same spirit, President Biden should also put on his Trump cap. And so, he did very briefly.”

Verdict

Missing context. The image shows President Biden briefly putting on a Trump cap during a light-hearted exchange with a person in Pennsylvania. It does not mean President Biden has endorsed Donald Trump.
