PESHAWAR: A ceasefire has been established in the Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following days of armed clashes between rival groups that resulted in the loss of around 50 lives and left around 175 others injured. The rival groups have abandoned their positions and surrendered control to security forces.

Deputy Commissioner Javed Ullah Mehsud said on Sunday that the tribes have vacated their trenches and bunkers located in the Peewar, Trimengal, Kunj Alizai Maqbal, and Para Chamkani areas. This crucial truce was facilitated by the efforts of the district administration, local police, security forces, and community elders, he noted.

The DC said that armed locals had vacated their hideouts, with representatives from a grand jirga remaining in the area to help maintain peace.

Major General Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti of the Ground Commanding Officer (GCO) was also present to advocate for lasting tranquility among the tribes.

The recent clashes not only caused significant casualties but also disrupted local travel, resulting in the closure of the Thall-Parachinar Road for over a week, leaving many residents stranded.

Deputy Commissioner Mehsud assured the public that measures were underway to reopen all roads in the district and restore normal vehicular traffic.

Hamid Hussain, a Member of the National Assembly from Kurram, called for calm among residents, urging them to unite in efforts to foster peace and stability in the region.
