TEHRAN: The top commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards has warned Israel that it would face “bitter consequences” following its strike on Iran’s military sites, Iranian media reported on Monday.

According to AFP, Iranian media reported that Guards head Hossein Salami claimed that Israel had “failed to attain its goals” with its air strikes on Saturday.

AFP reported that Israel struck military sites in reply to Tehran’s Oct. 1 missile strike, itself retaliation for the killing of Iran-backed fighters and a Revolutionary Guards general.

Hossein Salami stated the Israeli strike was a sign of “miscalculation as well as helplessness” as Israel battles Tehran-aligned groups in Lebanon and Gaza, according to AFP.  “Its bitter costs will be unimaginable” for Israel, Salami warned, local media reported.

Earlier, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that Israel’s strike which killed around 4 soldiers “should neither be exaggerated nor minimized.” He also described it as a “miscalculation” on Israel’s side.

Similarly, in a statement, President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that they do not seek war but they will defend the rights of their country.  He added that Tehran “will give an appropriate reply to the aggression of “the Zionist regime,”.

On Sunday, Iran’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi has reiterated Iran’s “right to reply,” also adding that Iran had “received indications” hours before Israel’s strike.
