KYIV: People in Ukraine are nervously following the final days of the presidential election campaign in the US, some fearing a victory for former Donald Trump may halt America’s vital help, Reuters news agency reported.

Tuesday’s US election will take place as the conflict with Russia grinds through its third year, with the outnumbered and outgunned Ukrainian military on the back foot against Moscow’s advancing forces. Reuters reported that Russia’s alliance with North Korea also appears more solid than ever, with the US and South Korea saying thousands of North Korean forces have been reportedly sent to Russia.

Former Ukrainian ambassador to the US Oleg Shamshur said that a Trump win would create grave risks, saying Trump’s repeated criticism of Washington’s support for Kyiv and claims that he would end the fighting within 24 hours, have raised Ukraine’s fears.

The US has driven NATO-wide support to Kyiv, with Ukraine receiving billions of dollars in financial and military help enabling it to keep up the fight against a much more powerful Moscow. Reuters news agency reported that Donald Trump has declined to say whether he wanted Kyiv to win, and has not published any strategy on how to end the conflict.
