Islamabad Court Rejects Bail Plea of Senator Azam Khan Swati

ISLAMABAD: A federal capital court in Pakistan on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of Senator and leader of Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), Azam Khan Swati in the controversial tweets case.

Special Judge Central Islamabad, by rejecting the bail plea of Senator Azam Swati stated that Azam Khan Swati repeated the crime by breaking the law and again made derogatory remarks on Twitter. The Court added that a responsible citizen could not use such a language. It said the accused adopted derogatory remarks against the state institutions twice through his verified account.

The prosecutor of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) stated that thousands of people are following Senator Swati on Twitter and further explained the nature of the message being spread via social media against the government organization. FIA prosecutor further said in the court that the accused attempted to incite hatred among his followers toward the members of the state institutions, and FIA is mandated to look into the controversial tweets.

Federal Investigation Agency’s Cybercrime Wing arrested the senator for using obnoxious remarks against the former army chief and other military officers. The senator has been arrested under sections 500, 501, 505, and 109 of the PPC.

The authorities had registered several FIRs against the PTI leader for his controversial tweets at different police stations, specifically in Karachi, Quetta, Jacobabad Qambar, Lasbela, Larkana, Sukkur, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Kandhkot, and other cities.

Swati was arrested in cases due to his divisive tweets about military officials. He was first detained in connection with a controversial tweet he posted on his official Twitter account in October, which allegedly contained threats against the army chief, the judiciary, and other state institutions. In that case, the senator obtained bail.
