LAHORE: In what seems to be a purely technical move, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on Friday withdrew the no-confidence motion filed against Chief Minister Punjab, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

The PML-N and the PPP on Monday night submitted a no-confidence motion against CM Punjab and Speaker Punjab Assembly in the provincial assembly secretariate. The resolution stated that CM Punjab had lost the support of the majority of MPAs and demanded the speaker holds a vote on the no-confidence motion.

CM Punjab still helpless

Even after the motion has been withdrawn, the deposed chief minister Punjab cannot dissolve the provincial assembly as he was de-notified by the Governor earlier in the day. The PML-N seemed in a weaker position when it came to voting on the no-confidence motion as compared to the vote-of-confidence sought by the Governor. Fearing defeat, the Shehbaz-led party didn’t want voting on the no-confidence motion and subsequently withdrew it. The deposed CM has already challenged the Governor’s notification in the court.

Earlier today, the coalition parties in Punjab filed a petition in the Lahore High Court, challenging notification issued by Governor Punjab Baligh-ur-Rehman on Thursday night to de-notify CM Elahi.
